It Was a Little Awkward When ...

It was a little awkward when the pharmacy called my house and left a message with my wife that they had received insurance approval for the renewal of my Viagra prescription. E and I have been separated for 8 months ...

I'm not sure what she believes. The fact is that I'm not seeing anybody else, nor do I plan to do so until we resolve the future of our marriage. But I do want to lay in a reasonable stockpile ...

It's a HIPAA violation for the pharmacy to talk to your wife regarding your Rx. They should have talked directly to you. Please leave them an alternative number where they can reach you for future communications.

Thanks Pam. In fact I have left them an alternative number (my cell phone) and I thought this was all settled. But possibly this particular prescription still is listed with my "home" number. Anyway I hadn't thought about it being a HIPAA violation, of course you're right. I will complain when I go in.

Well, there's always the possibility she might have thought they'd be for when you come back. That is not what you wanted, I'm sure.

For all the "laws" and training we in the medical profession get, not much is paid attention to. HIPAA will only work when it's enforced.

Wow, that must have be REALLY awkward. But it seems like you and E are strong enough to deal with little things like that these days.

Hi Byrd and WW, E hasn't said anything further about it, even though we've seen each other several times since. But I have feeling it could be eating at her. Haven't decided whether to bring it up. And if it really bothers her she'll bring it up herself at some point.

Seems to me that HIPAA rule Pam talks about is a good one. I can't believe a pharmacist would tell anyone besides the recipient about a Viagra prescription (or hemorhoid or Vaginal infection or a zillion other medications.) It's just common sense.

My guess is that, to some pharmacy clerk who's been doing this a few years, it seems no more notable then calling to say my condom order has come in. Uh, wait ...
